ISPS was the result of a strengthening maritime safety to include a focus on the risk of international security rather than just safety of ship at sea (SOLAS) under chapter XI-2. It is short for the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code and is the regulation responsible for the safety and security of ships, ports, cargo and crew. Applicable to international voyages with passenger ships and cargo ships of 500 GT and above it looks after security aspects of the ship, seafarers, ports and port workers to minimise the risk of security threats due to the movement of people.
